PureVPN delivers fast, annoying service to DD-WRT

PureVPN is a well liked VPN offering a variety of platforms, gateway countries (14) and servers (50+).   It can be used with 8 different platforms – Windows, Mac, Linux, Nokia, iOS, Android, Windows Mobile or, of course,  DD-WRT.  In addition to OpenVPN it can run under PPTP, L2TP or IPSec.

PureVPN takes privacy seriously with a plain English explanation of its privacy policy that reads in part:

We do not log any user activity (sites visited, DNS lookups, emails etc.). ..We will protect you to the max and our system is setup to automatically do so.

They allow P2P on servers in countries where it is allowed.

They offer a decent tutorial for DD-WRT set up that unfortunately involves manual configuration and some copy-and-pasting.  To change servers you have to manually edit the script, which may be intimidating to some users.

To use their system with DD-WRT you have to pick their “Unlimited Plan” at $18/month or $45/3 months or $85/6 months or $160 /1 year.

They do guarantee 99.9999% uptime which works out to less than 1 hour downtime per year.   Given the reliability of some VPN services this an awesome commitment and on par with telecom industry targets.   They also claim 1 Gbps service, which in light of most domestic service, sounds great….

And that’s where this review ends.   PureVPN requires identity verification through an odd, manual process.   Their tutorial states that you’ll automatically be e-mailed a script to set up DD-WRT if you purchase the correct service.   When I didn’t get it after a week I asked them for it.   They responded within 24 hours that my account had been suspended for suspected identity fraud.   I fulfilled 1 of the 3 options they gave me to verify my identity and they rejected it.

The rating below are presented without bias, but also without actually using their service.   Speed test results are based on published reports from my area by others.   Good luck with them.

An important test I could not run is whether your router will cut off service if the VPN connection is broken.   This is a typical weakness of script implementations.   If you use PureVPN over a DD-WRT you probably should run VPNNetMon on your client machine (Windows only).
